  6. INTRODUCTION:
  7.  
  8.     TRANS is a program which can translate a document from
  9. one language to another.  The program comes with an English to
  10. Spanish translation file, but you can easily create your own
  11. language translation files.
  12.     The TRANS program can also be used in a number of other
  13. ways.  To convert a PASCAL program to BASIC, you can create a
  14. file of translation terms, then have the program automatically
  15. convert common terms such as "writeln" to "PRINT".  The TRANS
  16. program is also easy to use.

  19. USING TRANS:
  20.  
  21.     To use TRANS you will need to start by having a text or
  22. ASCII file of the words you wish to translate.  A sample file
  23. called TEST has been included with the program and will be used
  24. in the example below.  You will also need a translation word file
  25. on your disk.  In this example, a Spanish to English file will be
  26. used, called SPANENG.
  27.     Start TRANS by typing from DOS the following:
  28.  
  29.                           TRANS <Return>
  30.                                  
  31.     The <Return> is the return key on your keyboard.  Once
  32. the program starts, you will be asked for the file name that
  33. holds the translation words.  The file SPANENG is supplied with
  34. the TRANS program, so type:
  35.  
  36.                          SPANENG <Return>
  37.                                  
  38.     You will next be asked for the name of the file to
  39. translate.  Type:
  40.  
  41.                           TEST <Return>
  42.                                  
  43.       You should substitute your own text file name for the
  44. word TEST in the future.  Now you will be asked to enter the name
  45. of the output file--where the translations go.  If you do not
  46. want an output file made, just type none.  Otherwise, type:
  47.  
  48.                         TEST.OUT <Return>
  49.                                  
  50. The translations will be placed in the file TEST.OUT.
  51.     Finally you will be asked if you want:
  52.       T. the Translations displayed on screen,
  53.           L. have the translations diplayed and be prompted for
  54.           any new word (LEARN Mode),
  55.           B. have the translations displayed with a Best guess
  56.           made for unknown words, or
  57.           N.  to display Nothing.
  58.           
  59.     Answer with a single letter--T,L,B or N.
  60.     In the LEARN Mode, whenever the program finds a word it
  61. cannot translate, it will ask you if you know the translation.
  62. If you know the translation and would like to add it to the file,
  63. just type y and then the new translation followed by <Return>.
  64. The new word will be added to the translation word file after the
  65. current work is done.
  66.     Words that TRANS cannot translate will be placed in marks
  67. like <this>.  This lets you easily find these word in the output
  68. file by searching for a '>' or a '<'.  After the translation is
  69. finished, you can use an ASCII word processor to correct grammer,
  70. punctuation and translation errors.
  71.     In Best guess mode, the program will use the closest in
  72. its dictionary file.  It will mark the word with a question mark
  73. before and after the translation, since the program is not sure
  74. of its choice.  You can edit the translation file later, by
  75. searching for question marks.
  76.     When the program is done, it will give you some
  77. information about the number of words that were translated and
  78. the lengths of the source file words.

  81. HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN TRANSLATION WORD FILES:
  82.  
  83.     If you would like to create your own files for
  84. translation of other language, just do the following.  Using an
  85. ASCII word processor, create a file with the search words
  86. followed by the translations.  Each should be on its own line.
  87. For example, if I wanted to make a translation word file to
  88. translate PASCAL to BASIC, I might start like this:
  89.  
  90.           writeln
  91.           PRINT
  92.           readln
  93.           INPUT
  94.           
  95.           (and so on..)
  96.           
  97. There should always be an even number of lines in the file, since
  98. each search word needs a translation word (or words).  See the
  99. SPANISH file for a more complete example.
  100.     The translation word file can hold up to 1750 search
  101. words and translations.  The next time you use TRANS and specify
  102. your new file, it will be sorted in alphabetical order, then
  103. rewritten.  This lets TRANS find matches more quickly.
  104.     Once you have a few search words and translations in your
  105. translation word file, it may be easier to add new words by using
  106. the LEARN mode described above.

  109. MORE INFORMATION
  110.     
  111.     You will notice that the translated document sounds
  112. rather strange.  This is caused by word order differences among
  113. different languages.  Although the translation will sound a bit
  114. like Yoda, the meaning should still be clear enough.
  115.     You can use TRANS as a simple word processor with built
  116. in translations!  Just type 'con' for the source file, and
  117. whatever name you want to give to the output file.  Now just type
  118. each line you want translated and hit <Return>, just like using a
  119. typewriter.  The words will be translated on screen, and copied
  120. to the file you want.  Just type Ctrl-Z to finish entering the
  121. words.

  124. REVERSE TRANSLATIONS
  125.  
  126.     Included with the Trans 1.0 program is the Switch 1.0
  127. program.  This program lets you create a reverse translation
  128. file.  For instance, you can create an English to Spanish
  129. translation file from a Spanish to English file.
  130.     Top use SWITCH, just type:
  131.  
  132.     SWITCH <Return>
  133.  
  134. Now, follow the prompts.  You will be asked to enter the name of
  135. the old translation word file.  Enter the name, then hit
  136. <Return>.  You will then be asked to wait while the file is
  137. rearranged and resorted.  When the sorting is done, the program
  138. will ask for a new translation word file name.  Enter the name
  139. you want, then hit <Return>.  More information is available as
  140. you use the program.
